Makita XPH12R Cordless Drill Review

If you find yourself working on some advanced DIY projects with drilling into stones and masonry but looking for a good drill with hammer function, you are in the right place. Investing your money in a good durable brushless drill like this one will not make you regret it. The incredible Makita XPH12R Hammer drill is very compact and powerful. It can deliver good power and satisfy the user, especially with the hammer function.

Size & Weight

The Makita XPH12R weighs only 3.6 lbs with its 2.0 Ah 18v battery and only 7 – 1/8 inch long. 3.6 lb is really not bad considering that it has a hammer function. This makes it both compact and powerful which is definitely a plus. Also, the size is still suitable for tight places to work on.

Power & Performance

You might be wondering- what can I really expect from a  compact hammer drill? That was my main initial question as well until I actually tried it. I was really surprised by its incredible performance – you can really feel the power and built quality. With the help of the brushless motor, Makita has done a very good job combining a 530 in. lbs max of torque that delivers more work per charge, increased power and speed, and definitely durable life. It has got two options of speeds which are (0-500 & 0-2,000 RPM) and (0-7,500 & 0-30,000 Blows Per Minute). This can handle a wide range of drilling, driving, and hammer applications. The drill kit (Makita XPH12R) comes with 2 Lithium-Ion battery pack with a capacity of 2.0 ah. I know it seems a little bad to have a small battery capacity with a hammer drill. But, with the help of the brushless motor and the good charger, each battery can take only 20 mins to be fully charged! Which keeps it one of the fastest in 18v tools, in another word, you can have a short break and come back! Unless the second battery is fully charged. Furthermore, the feel of the drill is amazing due to its rubber grip that helps you have more control over the drill.

Clutch & Chuck

You have got 21 adjustment tourqe settings on this drill to have better control over your screw driving applications. If your work contains masonry, you can simply switch the clutch to the hammer mode and get the job done. Makita has built the drill with a high-quality metal Chuck for an increased job site durability. It is 1/2 inch size and it’s keyless. It’s true that the metal Chuck will make the drill a little bit heavier but, durability is always important! Especially for a hammer drill that you are going to use it for masonry applications and more. The Makita XPH12 maximum capacity for wood is 1 – 1/2 inch and the maximum capacity for steel and masonry is 1/2 inch which is common for the most type of applications.

Extreme Protection Technology

Working in construction sites especially for masonry applications is always rough on your tools due to dust, dirt, and water. But, with Extreme Protection Technology from Makita, you don’t have to be worried. This technology will protect your drill from harsh conditions by the series of integrated seals that are designed to keep away dust and water for increased durability and longer life.

Star Protection Computer Controls

With Star Protection Technology, your drill is protected from many aspects that could harm and damage your drill. So, it will be protected against Overloading, Overheating, and Overcharging. This technology will help to keep the drill safer and it will definitely increase its lifetime.

Brushless Motor

The Makita XPH12R has a brushless motor and that means that the drill can perform 50% more work per battery charge, increased speed, increased power, and have a longer life tool.
